Onyeka Onwenu: Oh Death, Where Is Thy Sting?

By Alex Otti

I have been trying to make sense out of the events of the last 24 hours with limited success. My sister Onyeka Onwenu was not even on the list to perform. She was not expected as she was said to be outside the country. She gets back and hears about my other sister’s (Dr. Mrs. Stella Okoli’s) 80th birthday celebration. She rearranges things quickly and shows up to the surprise of everyone.

The boisterous Onyeka would not be there and not sing at Sister Stella’s birthday. She would do just two songs and take her seat. Two songs became three, four and more! I have watched Onyeka several times perform on stage. But this was her best performance that I saw. Little did I know that this was going to be the last! I was still in awe of the raw energy and poise that she exuded on stage when I heard someone ask “do we have a doctor in the house”? Something told me to check and find out what had happened. Lo and behold it was my sister on the floor! She had slumped and was gasping for breath. Help came quickly and off to the hospital she went. His Excellency, Peter Obi offered to drive behind the ambulance while the rest of us stayed back.

It was not until around midnight that I got a message that all was not well. On getting to the hospital, I got the shocker of my life. My Sister had just passed. She was said to have had a heart attack! Is this how people die? Can such a lively and, to the best of my knowledge, very fit and healthy person just die like that? Is the line of distinction between life and death this thin? Did she know this was her last performance that she held the audience spell bound for the duration of her appearance? Was there anything one could have done to save the situation? Was it time for God to call her back? Questions and questions without answers.Onyeka Onwenu was one of the most outstanding songsters to emerge from the African continent, blessing several generations with countless soul stirring lyrics, and most importantly, teaching us important lessons in life, love and service.

Her longevity in the industry, and relevance, even at her hour of departure, point us to the great gift and talent she really was.So much has been said and written about Onyeka the musician, the movie star, the broadcaster, communication specialist, administrator, politician and public figure. What many have however missed is Onyeka’s passion, energy and the untiring spirit she brought to anything she committed herself to. She was one who made no accommodation for half measures because she clearly understood her mission as a pathfinder, and inspiration to several generations of women. Onyeka’s life from her early age was one of beating the odds, overcoming setbacks and rising to set standards that will define excellence for peers and observers.Cry, we certainly will, but we must be comforted by the fact that Onyeka lived joyfully and departed in grace, bringing joy to many, even as her last hours approached.

Our best tribute to her will be to remind ourselves each day that like Onyeka’s, our impact will be measured by how well we do the things that uplift others, offer hope to the desolate, and leave positive marks that will outlive our mortal frames. My last word to Onyeka will be one of gratitude. Thank you for being my sister, even though that visit to Abia did not happen after all! Thank you for touching lives, for being true and brave, and for teaching us that our lives can only be full and impactful when we make the most of the abilities and resources that have been availed us.To Onyeka’s sons, Abraham and Tijani, do please accept my sympathies on the demise of your dearly beloved mum. We must now take courage in the fact that our dear Onyeka left us indelible lessons in overcoming setbacks and reaching for the stars.Good night Sister. Ka chi fo!

The NewsGuru.com reports that a metro bus driver ran over Matuluko and killed her in Houston, Texas, last Friday morning while walking to her place of work, City of Houston Human Resources.

According to local media, the woman was in the crosswalk and was signalled to go before the impatient driver rammed her over.

“The video we’ve been able to review so far indicates the pedestrian was in the crosswalk. The pedestrian had a walk signal, so it appears the pedestrian was legal in crossing the street at the time,” a statement credited to a Metro police, Lt. Tim McClelland, as reported by Fox26, a US-based news medium, explained.

The police faulted the driver for not waiting for the 32-year-old to cross before knocking her down.

I’m told anytime something like this happens, the driver is immediately taken for drug and alcohol testing to check for any possible impairment,” McClelland added.

While mourning her death, a statement that was also credited to Jane Cheeks, a director from the deceased’s workplace, read, “Damilola Matuluko joined the City of Houston HR Operations Employee Relations team in December 2023, supporting the Houston Public Works Department.

Meanwhile, a travel agent, who goes by the name Toccanada on Instagram, described the deceased as her school daughter who was “respectful and peaceful”, saying, “You will always be remembered.”

Olanike Bamidele added, “Your name will forever be part of my success in this country. Damilola was a lady with a heart of gold.”

Oba of Benin dances as looted artefacts return from Germany

Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, yesterday, evoked memories of old as he danced to the songs of his forebears when he received two artefacts from Germany through the National Commission for Museum and Monument, NCMM.

Alongside others, the artefacts were looted by the British during their invasion of the Benin palace in 1897.

The two items were handed over to the NCMM on behalf of the Nigerian government by the German authorities in 2022.

Director-General of the NCMM, Mr Olugbile Holloway, on behalf of the Federal Government, yesterday, presented them.

Addressing the monarch, Holloway pledged collaboration with the Benin Royal Court in uplifting and displaying the Edo heritage.

He said: “NCMM will join hands with the Royal Court to create a befitting destination for people around the world to come and appreciate these works. What you see before us was originally taken away from the Royal family in 1897. We have a stool made of Bronze and a wooden stool. I speak for every member of my team when I say that we remain loyal to the Royal Court. If there is anything we can do, we will do to support this laudable initiative.

”This heritage is not just Benin heritage, but Nigeria’s heritage. When we speak of Benin heritage, there is nobody that doesn’t know the great works of ours. I appreciate you, we will always do what we can do with our powers to make His Royal Majesty lineage in memory.”

After unveiling the repatriated artefacts, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, with excited Chiefs and members of the royal family, danced to Benin traditional rendition in dramatic dance steps, offering prayers to God and his ancestors.

The monarch appreciated the German government and the federal government for their efforts.
Recall that the Swedish government had also it would return 39 pieces of Benin artefacts in its Museum to the custody of Obaseki Ewuare II.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, said the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Annika Hahn-Englund, conveyed the Swedish government decision when she paid a courtesy visit to Oba of Benin Palace in Benin City, Edo State.

Prince Harry Was Reportedly “In Tears” When He Learned That King Charles Gave Prince William a Role That, Had Harry Remained a Working Member of the Royal Family, Would Have Likely Been Given to Him

Asreported yesterday, on the same day thatarrived in the U.K. earlier this week, his father,, made Harry’s brother,, the leader of the regiment that Harry once served in—and new information is being reported that the move landed Harry in tears.

On Tuesday, the King announced that the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps—the regiment Harry served in during his service in Afghanistan—would officially be passed to William. “His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,” a statement fromread. According to, had Harry not stepped back as a working member of the royal family (which he did alongside wife Meghan Markle in 2020), the role would have likely gone to Harry.

The timing of the announcement is iffy at best, andreports that Harry got emotional and was “in tears” at hearing the news of William’s appointment given by Charles—no doubt exacerbated by Charles’for his younger son while Harry was in the U.K. this week.

“King Charles’ announcement that Prince Harry is being stripped of his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps is a real kick in the teeth for the son who always felt marginalized and underrated,” royal author Tom Quinn toldThe Mirror. “What makes it much worse is that the role is being given to the very man who Harry sees as the cause of so many of his problems—his brother. And the announcement was deliberately made during Harry’s brief visit to the U.K. to have maximum impact—it shows Harry that he really is no longer welcome.”

Quinn claimed that senior royals knew that the announcement would “really hurt” Harry: “He is said to have been in tears when he heard,” Quinn said. “But they have decided the gloves are off and that Harry needs to realize that when you betray the family, you don’t just escape the things you hated doing as a working royal. You also lose the things you loved.”

William is expected to take over the role soon—on May 13, this upcoming Monday.

Harry remains extremely proud of his decade of service in the British Army, which included two tours in Afghanistan. Quinn added that “Harry feels his time in the military was a rare happy time in his life when he was judged on his merits as a man, not on his merits as a member of the royal family,” he said. “Having always hated being the spare in terms of the succession, he now finds that one of the few important roles he had as the younger brother has now been handed over to the person Harry himself described as his nemesis. Harry cannot fail to get the message—his last few ties to his old life are being cut, and he is being set adrift, permanently.”
