Fashion student, 23, shot in the head at close range during Iran protests

The family of a 23-year-old student k!lled in protests in Iran have said that they had to sift through hundreds of young people’s bodies to find her.

Rubina Aminian, 23, a fashion student at Shariati College in Tehran, was k!lled after leaving the college and joining protest gatherings on the evening of Thursday, January 8.

Sources close to her family told Iran Human Rights that the young Kurdish woman was shot from close range from behind in the head.

Upon hearing of her k!lling, her family travelled to Tehran to identify her.

They were met with lots of bodies of protesters who had been k!lled in the past week but weren’t allowed to take her for burial.

Rubina’s mother said: “It wasn’t just my daughter; I saw hundreds of bodies with my own eyes.”

A source close to her said: “The family was forced to search among the bodies themselves to identify their daughter, and they undoubtedly saw many of the bodies of young people k!lled during the protests.”

Her family described Rubina as “a young woman full of joy for life and passionate about fashion and clothing design, whose dreams were buried by the violent repression of the Islamic Republic.”

Eventually the family managed to free her body but found out that the army had surrounded their home in Marivan, preventing her burial. She was buried on the roadside between Kermanshah and Kamyaran.

Her name emerged as one of at least 500 protesters k!lled in Tehran since mass demonstrations threatened to topple the regime.

Iran threatened to attack Israel and US bases if Donald Trump launches strikes over the brutal crackdown on anti-government protestors.

Meanwhile, enormous crowds of Iranians defied threats they would face the de@th penalty to gather across the country on Saturday night, Jan. 10, in the largest challenge to the rule of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Hundreds of protestors are feared to have been k!lled in the past three days by security forces loyal to the regime, which is fighting for its survival.

Iran is under an internet blackout, but verified video has emerged showing protestors taking over the streets in Tehran’s Gisha district and clashing with security forces in the city of Mashhad.

The de@th toll in the crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran has spiked to at least 538 people, activists said.

More than 10,600 people have been detained, said the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Of those k!lled, 490 are protesters and 48 are members of the security forces, it said, warning the toll is likely to go up.

With the internet down in Iran and phone lines cut off, gauging the demonstrations from abroad has grown more difficult.

The Iranian government has not offered any overall casualty figures for the demonstrations.

Khamenei has labelled the demonstrators a “bunch of vandals” seeking to “please” Trump.

The latest anti-government protests in Iran began on December 28, 2025, over rampant inflation.

They have since spread to more than 100 cities.

The regime imposed an internet blackout, which reportedly applies to international phone calls, on Thursday, Jan. 8, according to internet freedom watchdog NetBlocks.

Despite this, images have emerged of protests across the country, as well as a huge fire ripping through a government building in Karaj, near Tehran.

Hospitals are said to be facing a “completely chaotic” situation, overwhelmed with de@d and injured patients.

An Iranian social worker who attended a protest in Tehran on Friday told CNN that the demonstration turned into a “nightmare” when security forces began attacking people on the streets.

She said: “Bullets, who knows, tear gas, whatever you can think of, they would fire them. And it was very terrifying.”

Tears As Court Court Orders Remand of Arrested Ekpoma Protesters at Edo Correctional Centre

The Edo State High Court, Criminal Court 2, has ordered the remand of several youths arrested during the recent protest in Ekpoma at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre.

The decision followed an application by the prosecution requesting a 14-day remand period. Emotional scenes were witnessed in court as some of the detained protesters and their relatives broke down in tears while those arrested were escorted into a waiting vehicle.

The protest, which took place over the weekend, was sparked by growing concerns over kidnapping and other security challenges in Ekpoma, located in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Viral videos circulating online showed residents demonstrating against rising cases of abduction and killings in the Edo Central region, with some individuals reportedly fleeing a local market during the unrest.

Police: Protest Was Hijacked

The police said they intervened promptly after the demonstration was allegedly taken over by individuals who engaged in violent activities. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Edo State Police Command said officers were deployed immediately at the start of the protest to ensure it remained peaceful and lawful.

However, the command claimed that the protest later degenerated, resulting in vandalism, looting, destruction of property, and an incident in which a military personnel allegedly discharged a firearm, injuring a protester.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, led additional tactical reinforcements from Benin to Ekpoma to restore order and prevent further escalation. The police said normalcy was restored through coordinated deployments and professional crowd-control measures.

The command confirmed that individuals suspected of engaging in violence, vandalism, and looting were arrested, while investigations are ongoing to ensure all those responsible are prosecuted.

Protester Shot

The police also disclosed that CP Agbonika visited a 32-year-old man identified as Osagie Abraham, who was shot during the protest and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility in Ekpoma.

The commissioner reportedly ordered a full investigation into the shooting, noting that the military personnel involved has been identified and the appropriate authorities notified for disciplinary action in line with established procedures.

While reaffirming citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest, the police stressed that demonstrations must be conducted responsibly and without infringing on public safety or property.

Addressing concerns about kidnapping, the police assured residents that intensified intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, and targeted interventions are being deployed across Edo State, including Ekpoma.

Rising Insecurity Concerns

Some residents have raised concerns over the presence of herders allegedly residing deep within communities and accused of attacking locals. The Convener of the Esan Worldwide Community, Aigbokhan Oseremen, urged the Edo State Government to regulate settlement in rural areas through permits and monitoring.

He alleged that some of the herders posed serious security threats, calling for stronger government action.

Responding, the Edo State Government said decisive measures were underway. The Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Media and Publicity, Bugie Okhuemoi, said technology-driven strategies were being implemented to flush out criminal elements from forest areas.

Government Reassurance

Governor Monday Okpebholo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, assuring residents that there would be no safe haven for criminals.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor said his government has invested heavily in modern security equipment, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency collaboration to combat kidnapping, cultism, and other crimes.

He emphasized that security operations are ongoing across the state and warned that anyone involved in criminal activities would be identified and brought to justice.

“This administration will not allow criminals or their sponsors to hold Edo State hostage. There will be no hiding place for perpetrators,” the governor said, while calling on residents to support security agencies with timely information.

The Edo State Police Command, through its spokeswoman, ASP Eno Ikoedem, has clarifeid the true position of events surrounding the protest that occurred in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, and the swift interventions undertaken to restore peace and public safety.

According to her, following reports of a planned protest in Ekpoma, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, on Sunday, 4th January, 2026 proactively visited the town in furtherance of the Command’s preventive policing strategy. The objective, she said was to openly dialogue, address grievances, promote peaceful expression, and forestall any breakdown of law and order.

“Upon the commencement of the protest yesterday 10th January, 2026 the Area Commander, Ekpoma, immediately mobilized Police personnel in strategic collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure that the protest remained peaceful, orderly, and within the confines of the law. Regrettably, the protest was hijacked and all the rules of peaceful protest was ignored which led to incidents including malicious
damages, looting of property, vandalisation of shops, as well as a millitary personnel discharging firearms at a protester.

“In response to the sudden escalation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, promptly led additional tactical reinforcements from the State Command Headquarters, Benin to Ekpoma to reinforce operational control, restore public order, and prevent further degeneration of the situation. Through coordinated deployments, strategic positioning of personnel, and professional crowd control measures, normalcy was swiftly restored across the affected areas.

“The Commissioner of Police has personally visited the man who was shot during the protest, 32 years old Osagie Abraham who is presently receiving medical attention at Eromoele Medical Center, Ekpoma. He has ordered the immediate and thorough investigation of the incident” she concluded Meanwhile, the military personnel involved in the shooting incident has been identified while the appropriate military authorities, have been formally notified for necessary administrative and disciplinary action in line with established protocols. Those who engaged in acts of violence, vandalism, and looting have also been identified and arrested, and thorough investigations are ongoing to ensure that all culpable persons are brought to justice as the

Commissioner of Police has reiterates that it is the constitutional right of citizens to engage in lawful protest and freely express their grievances; however, such protests must always be conducted peacefully, responsibly, and without infringing on the rights, safety, and property of other members of the public.

Addressing the concerns raised by residents regarding the incidence of kidnapping, the Commissioner of Police assures the public that the Edo State Police Command is deploying intensified intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, and targeted tactical interventions to decisively curb kidnapping across Edo State, including Ekpoma. The Command remains resolute in doing everything within its available resources to dismantle criminal networks in the state and sustain public confidence.

Members of the public, particularly residents of Ekpoma and its environs, are therefore advised to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, as the situation is firmly under control and normalcy has been fully restored.

The Command appreciates the cooperation of law-abiding citizens and urges continued partnership with security agencies in maintaining peace and order.

Aiyedatiwa, the man from the backwaters at 61: focusing on Legacy

By Idowu Ajanaku

Quote:

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s contributions to the progress, growth and development of Ondo State, formerly as Deputy Governor, Acting Governor, and now Governor, are a pragmatic testament to his visionary leadership and passion for public service.”

-Gov.Sanwo-Olu ( Congratulating Aiyetadiwa at 60 on behalf of the South-West Governors’ Forum )

Call him a jinx-breaker of some sort, a history-maker or better still, a trail blazer and you might not be far from the truth. In fact, his intriguing yet, inspiring life trajectory resonates with that of great leaders, who as John Harold Johnson, the creative mind behind the popular Ebony Magazine referred to as those who have taught the world that ” the greater the obstacles we overcome in life, the greater the glory we achieve”. But who really is the subject of this tribute? That is the million- naira question

Good enough, the answer is right here before us as he is none other than Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa (born 12 January 1965), the first Ondo citizen from the backwaters of the coastal Ilaje community to mount the prestigious pedestal as the executive governor of the acclaimed Sunshine State. An astute businessman and people- oriented politician, who as fate would have it has served as governor of Ondo state since 2023. Before then he was the deputy governor of Ondo State from 2021 to 2023 under Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (of blessed memory ). But what has defined his sterling leadership capacity are the outstanding capabilities to bridge the gap between the people’s most pressing needs and government’s popular policies. Interestingly, these are amplified by the achievements especially in the critical areas of security, infrastructural development, agriculture, education, healthcare delivery, youth development, job creation, transportation and tourism.

His is therefore, a true testament of a leadership with character, commitment, consistency and of course, the courage to dare whatever odds he finds along the way. And to do so, he has taken those challenges as hurdles to rise above; scale over and keep moving along the crooked paths that have eventually taken him to the governorship glory, that he is reckoned with as at this day. That rhymes with the thoughts of the iconic Chinese martial arts sports gem, Bruce Lee who explained the wisdom in turning one’s challenges as stepping stones to greater heights. As Roger Crawford rightly noted: “Being challenged in life is inevitable, but being defeated is optional”. Aiyedatiwa made the right choice.

So good that this has been amply reflected with regards to his praiseworthy achievements, ever since his Inauguration on February 24, 2025 he has kept to the tenets of the 1999 constitution that the primary purpose of government include the guarantee of security and provision of welfare to the citizenry ( Section 14 (2) (b) ). His administration has therefore, strengthened securiity by completing the second phase of utility vehicle distribution to security agencies which has increased mobility and rapid response of the security operatives, Amotekun inclusive. Also, additional funds were released to support security operations across the state, ensuring greater safety for residents and their businesses processes.

With resoluteness of purpose combined with

resilience, creativity and being futuristic

in vision and action he and his able team have turned Ondo state into a construction site, indeed an industrial hub of the country, Nigeria. On infrastructural development for which he keeps receiving accolades, his administration’s resolve to revive and complete several abandoned projects left behind by previous governments is praiseworthy. So is the construction of the 7km road at Gbangbabalogun axis at Akure stands out. There is also the reconstruction and rehabilitation of over 60 kilometers of roads across various parts of the state . Apart from their even distribution, this salutary effort is making transportation easier for the citizens while improving access to economic and social opportunities. All these are worthy of commendation.

So is the rehabilitation and reconstruction of selected roads, totaling 60 kilometers, reducing travel time and improving connectivity. The administration has flagged off the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, a critical route that supports commerce and tourism.

When it comes to educational development, the employment of over 2,000 teachers in both primary and secondary schools in addition to the construction and renovation of schools have cumulatively boosted quality education delivery. This would eventually reduce unemployment by providing jobs for several youths. Furthermore, to ease the financial burden on families, the government paid ₦633 million to cover the WAEC fees of 23,000 secondary school students. This noble initiative ensures that no child is left behind due to economic challenges. On the improvement of learning resource, the state introduced a 1:1 textbook-to-learner policy, ensuring that every pupil has access to core learning materials. In addition, books, tablets, and sports equipment were distributed to elementary schools to promote holistic education. The expected spin-off effects point to a brighter future.

In fact, one remarkable policy implementation is his prudent financial management of state funds. Apart from ensuring that all political appointees declare their assets to curb corruption Ondo State recorded an 82.6% reduction in its domestic debt profile, the highest percentage in the country. This reflects fiscal discipline and effective debt management strategies. And has gone a long way in stabilizing the financial system and restoring confidence in the state’s economy.

In a similar vein, in the health sector, the governor’s intervention in upgrading 102 health centres has largely improved access to primary healthcare delivery. In addition, a modern drug warehouse was commissioned in Akure, designed to improve the availability and distribution of essential drugs to health facilities across the state. The ongoing rehabilitation of 50 primary healthcare facilities is underway across different communities, strengthening the grassroots health system and improving access to essential care

Pointing the way to agriculture, over the years Ondo state has stood out with vibrant vision for food security, availability, and rural development. As the major cocoa producer in Nigeria, there is growing focus on chocolate processing, with several initiatives aimed at boosting local value addition. The state government and private investors have been developing cocoa processing facilities, including the Johnvents Cocoa Processing Factory, to increase the amount of cocoa processed locally. Also, on Agriculture and Youth Empowerment, investors were engaged in the agriculture and agribusiness sectors, while 100 youths received training in modern farming techniques, boosting food security and employment opportunities. That is in addition to acquiring 10,000 hectares of land to position agriculture as a key driver of economic growth of the state.

On the indusrrial landscape the state is actively pursuing the development of a deep-sea port at Araromi Seaside, also known as the Ondo Sea Port. This project is considered a key part of the state’s economic development strategy, with plans including a 75-kilometer stretch of unbroken Atlantic coastline and an adjacent Free Trade Zone. The deep-sea port is envisioned to be located two kilometers offshore. The governor has also emphasized the need for synergy among security agencies to protect border communities, which is likely related to the port development and its potential impact on the region.

One unique attribute of this administration is that of empowering women to ensure gender parity and equity In the light of this, grants were distributed to 1,000 low-income women to support small-scale businesses and income-generating activities. This has significantly assisted to reduce poverty and promote financial independence.

In all of these, the governors’ landmark achievements keep receiving well deserved commendations from within and outside the state because they are people- focused; they enjoy equitable distribution across Ondo state and have positively impacted on their Human Development Index ( HDI ). And as a grateful personality who spends quality time actively engaged in praising God every last Friday of the month there can only be more glorious years ahead.

Big congratulations!

Idowu Ajanaku, Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Ondo State

By Ebinum Samuel

The Nigerian Air Force, under the Joint Task Force South West, Operation AWATSE, has arrested drug suspects and recovered assorted narcotics during an intelligence-led operation in Lagos, handing them over to the National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Speaking during the briefing, Air Commodore Muhammed Imam, the Commander, Base Services Group and Air Component Commander of Operation AWATSE, said the operation was established to protect critical national assets and combat multiple security threats in the South West.

He said: “The Joint Task Force South West Operation AWATSE was established to halt pipeline vandalism, crude oil and petroleum product theft along the 72 kilometre pipeline from the Atlas Po to the Mosimi Depot. The operation is also an anti-banditry, anti-kidnapping, anti-robbery and anti-drug abuse operation.”

He said the launch of a follow-up operation was based on a Federal Government directive conveyed through the Chief of Defence Staff.

He said: “In line with this mandate and in accordance with the recent Federal Government of Nigeria Directive, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, directed the theatre commander of the operation to launch Operation Ember Guard.

“Accordingly, Operation Ember Guard was launched to deny criminal elements in the southwest the freedom of action”, which he said made sustained patrols and raids lead to the arrest of suspects in December.

“With 18,000 raid operation patrols and in this light, on the 28th of December, while leading an intelligent lead operation around Igimu, Tatuaru and Egbeda, we arrested these 16 drug suspects.”

He listed items recovered from the suspects to include crack form of cocaine, 60 pieces of loud, 40 pieces of coded cough syrup, Kola and barcadi, six barcode, two pieces of Russian cream.

“We also recovered three electronic skills. We recovered crushers as well as psychotropic drugs like rohypnol, as well as ice.”

The base commander, who said the suspects were transferred to the appropriate agency for further action, were afterwards handed over to the NDLEA, who are statutorily mandated to deal with this kind of issue.

Also speaking, Stephen Oboshua, NDLEA Deputy Commander of Narcotics and Area Commander of Teju, commended the Nigerian Air Force for the arrests.

Representing the NDLA leadership in Lagos, he expressed appreciation for inter-agency collaboration.

He said: “On behalf of the State Commander-in-Person of ACGM, Aba Kaurani, and the entire Lagos State Strategic Command, we are appreciating the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force for taking it upon themselves in the course of their duties to effect the arrest of these six suspects and the several drugs being displayed here right now.”

He said the agency remained firm in its stance against drug abuse and trafficking, just as he stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies.

“We appreciate the synergy that we are enjoying with other systems, agencies, especially with the Nigerian Customs and Air Force officers and the Nigerian Navy.”

He noted that the fight against drugs was critical to protecting young people and “we shall continue to help the Nigerians to reduce the proliferation of drugs in their society, which tends to affect our youth, especially the central nervous system that we know that these drugs are affecting. Most of these drugs are depressants, drugs, and psychoactive in nature”.
